Description
Everything here began with what the storm did not carry off—just enough to gather in both hands. I laid out those scraps, border ends curling from the wet, thread tails knotted and already tangled. The piece doesn’t cover the break; it opens around it, like a circle made by setting down a bowl that once held something warm. That broken ceramic lid—still cool from the last rain—sits at the center, its edge rough where it chipped. I stitched from the fracture, out and out, not to close it but to give the emptiness a kind of weight. The stitches know where my hands slipped, where the linen stretched because the air was too soft to resist. The weather writes its own lines here—see where the green pooled, where the brown faded to a hush. When I pull a thread through, I think of mending my mother’s tablecloth after a spill: slow, not to erase the stain, but to cradle it so it does not spread. Some things are only understood by the hands—what holds, what gives way.
